The Starfish Poem – Words of Advice for Graduates

(words of advice for college graduates … + the starfish poem)

Words of Advice for Graduates & The Starfish Poem

Update >> Since graduation season is once again upon us, we have decided to republish this post since it seems as relevant seven years later as the day we wrote it. In those seven years, Daniel has gone on to forge a distinguished career in education. And, in my ever so humble opinion, he truly is heeding his commencement speaker's advice and both doing something that matters & helping to save the world. And while I am at it, I want to congratulate two of my nieces who are graduating this spring, Katie and Sami. Two more graduates who I am certain will make their mark in the world!

My son, along with his peers from across the country, graduated from college this year. Our family had the honor of listening to Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy in the Obama administration, deliver the Washington University of St Louis commencement address. Chu, in his own uniquely charming and witty way, told the graduates his “take home message to you will be just one sentence. Actually, it will be just four words.”

Do something that matters.”

and then Chu added

Help save the world.

Mountain Day Inspiration >> Celebrate Autumn!

Today is Mountain Day! The Smith College bells were rung early this morning (October 5th) to announce that the college's president has suspended classes for the day. Students are free to go hiking, have picnics, pick apples at local farms, or just take a relaxing break. #smithmountainday

What a beautiful tradition!  As some of you who have been following me for a while know, this is not the first time I have waxed poetic about Mountain Day.  I truly believe that every institution and organization should establish a similar holiday dedicated to re-invigorating the soul. Wear Your Belief, Proudly & Purposefully!

This week has the potential of being a profoundly spiritual week for millions of people across America.  Not only did Jews across the world celebrate Yom Kippur, a day of atonement and repentance, a day reflection and meditation, Pope Francis landed in Washington, D.C and immediately began sharing his message of love for all. Today we sincerely hope that the Pope's message will remind us all, no matter our personal religious faith or affiliation, to find the courage to make our lives a blessing, today and everyday. Nicholas Sparks Advice on How to Write Valentine’s Day One Liners

Nicholas Sparks Advice on How to Write Valentine's Day One Liners

Who tells a love story better than Nicolas Sparks?  He is the ultimate go to for tear jerking stories of never ending love and devotion. There isn't anybody we would trust more when it comes to love one liners so we had to share this article with you in the spirit of Valentines Day and love.

Nicholas Sparks’s Four S’s of Writing a Valentine’s Day One-Liner

Nicholas Sparks is the bestselling author of 18 novels. Eight of his books — Message in a Bottle, a Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John, The Last Song, The Lucky One and Safe Haven — have been made into movies. Here are his tips for writing the perfect one-liner

Keep it STRONG

Be committed. Your line must convey love, and convey it in no uncertain terms. Stay away from language that is open for interpretation or that leaves room for doubt—avoid words like “might” and “maybe.”

Keep it SINCERE

Think about love as a very real, personal thing between you and the person you love. Find inspiration from your relationship. What does this love mean to you?

Keep it SIMPLE

Your goal is to convey your feelings—not your intelligence. Don’t be too wordy, and if you’re going to use metaphor, pick one; it’s better to have one metaphor that says it all than a number of metaphors that each fall short in their own way.

Keep it SHORT

Do not hide your message in an endless parade of phrases, words, and descriptions. Part of what makes the phrase “I love you” so powerful is that it evokes such a powerful emotion in so few words.
