Finally, after hours and hours spent filling out applications and writing college essays, and then enduring the interminable waiting game, college acceptance (and rejection) letters are beginning to trickle in. Our advice is simple — toss the rejection letters. And celebrate every acceptance whether it is your first choice school or your safety school! Celebrate your achievements and the schools who appreciate you! Once you narrow your choices down and ultimately make the final decision as to which school will be the lucky school to include you in their class of 2020, begin wearing your new school colors. Splurge on college gear. Buy college t-shirts and sweatshirts, hats and caps, college pennants, bedding, watches and jewelry, and anything and everything else to proclaim your new college spirit. It is that time of year. School is starting and pledge season follows shortly. So we thought it might be the perfect time to once again share our hands down favorite Pi Beta Phi arrow gift.
For years we have been proclaiming that if we could own one and only one piece of jewelry that screamed Pi Beta Phi, it would be these stunning Stella & Dot “On the Mark” Arrow Necklaces. It is amazing how one small icon can embody the essence of a Pi Phi woman: strong, bold, direct, and purposeful yet subtle, delicate, and feminine. This beautiful arrow necklace is a must have for any Pi Beta Phi, pledge or alum. Buy one for yourself and one for your big and little sister. Not only will the arrow necklaces remind you of where you have been but it will also keep you pointed in the right direction going forward.
Today is Mountain Day! The Smith College bells were rung early this morning (October 5th) to announce that the college's president has suspended classes for the day. Students are free to go hiking, have picnics, pick apples at local farms, or just take a relaxing break. #smithmountainday
What a beautiful tradition! As some of you who have been following me for a while know, this is not the first time I have waxed poetic about Mountain Day. I truly believe that every institution and organization should establish a similar holiday dedicated to re-invigorating the soul. Continue Reading →
An OMG Big Brother & Big Sister Baby Shower Gift
We just found car seat covers too!
Just when when we think there are no more products to put a logo on we are giddy with surprise. These team spirit booster seats make for an OMG big brother & big sister baby shower gift. How perfect is this for a couples shower where so many of the friends invited are college buddies and gal pals of the dad and mom-to-be. Yes, we admit we are jumping the gun because these team spirit booster seats are not meant to replace your car seat. These are the seats your child graduates into once they are at least 40 pounds and 4 years of age.
It is the gizmo you keep your child in until he or she is big enough to fit in a seat belt properly. Obviously, only consider this gift if the parents-to-be have the room to store it or if they have an older child who will soon be passing along his or her car seat to the new baby and graduating into a booster seat. Clearly we are true believers that indoctrination into the Trojan Nation, or whatever your favorite college team, works best when started early!
These booster seats would also make great birthday presents and holiday gifts for children making the transition into the “big kid” booster seat, especially if they are whining that they are old enough and do not need a booster seat. Please, please, do not cave into the whine – according to the CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention)
“Booster seat use reduces the risk for serious injury by 45% for children aged 4–8 years when compared with seat belt use alone!”
Despite all of today's high tech gadgets and ways to track and sync our busy schedules, college coeds still often prefer the old fashion day planner. Case in point: my daughter Isabelle who is always right on top of what is in and what is not spent hours on her one day home this summer searching for and then custom designing this year's day planner. She already knew many of the girls in her classes at USC would be sporting an Erin Condren planner this semester so she wanted hers to stand out from the rest.
This is a bit embarrassing to admit but it took us multiple hours to perfect her design. Izzy wanted her planner to coordinate with her new chevron bedding without being too matchy matchy. (It probably would have taken only 15 minutes from start to finish if she would have just been willing to order Erin Condren's fabulous zig zag planner, but no such luck.) Plus she wanted different, but coordinating designs on the front and on the back of the planner. A tad complicated but oh so cute!
Simple Summer Decor Ideas
A few days ago, we showcased the new chalkboard chic and I mentioned that my always on trend daughter added a highly practical (and well used) chalkboard wall to her summer rental. Yesterday, I happened to be in Los Angeles for a meeting and stopped by her room to check out the wall and drop off a few packages. The chalkboard wall looks as great as I thought it would. What she didn't tell me is that she also added a chandelier decal to the top bunk wall. It was so, so cute!
This decal is on sale for just $8.00 and would look way more elegant on a white wall so the white sticker elements would not show so much!
So if you are looking for a simple way to decorate or redesign any room this summer (even a sticky, icky fraternity dorm room!), wall decals might be the perfect solution! Here are a few of our favorite designs:
Make your walls take flight with these 3D white Pop Up Birds. Just remove from the sheet and pop out or fold on the creases to create unique birds in assorted shapes and sizes. This Foil Butterfly wall decal is a fun and bright room addition, especially at the sale price of just $15.00. These adorable Baby Blue Dots wall decals are the perfect touch for any baby or little boy's room. Multi-sized dots in shades of blue and brown are the colors “du jour” adding just the right combination to his special room. Apply in minutes and enjoy! And finally, wouldn't it be cute to set up a summer reading corner? Simply apply two Owl Chalkboard Decals to a corner wall near a comfy chair. Now all you need to do is keep a running list of all the books you have read this summer on one owl and the ones you want to read on the other. Use colored chalk!
Yes, my baby turns 18 today. It seems like just yesterday I was planning her nursery and now, together, my daughter and I are shopping for her dorm room. Where did we turn for inspiration? Serena & Lily, of course. My daughter picked out Serena & Lilly's Isabel Set (how perfect since she is an Isabelle) for her bedding in hopes of adding a bit of sunshine to an otherwise drab dorm room. So that the room does not come across as too “babyish” she is accessorizing with a mix of modern and vintage touches and random splashes of unexpected color. I can't wait to see her USC dorm room all put together — check back in August for pictures!
