Fox Theme Party Planning, Ideas, Decor & Supplies

Foxy everything is by far the latest and greatest animal obsession to hit the states.  It all started with the Ylvis – The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) Video parody created by a Norwegian comedy duo.  In just under a month they have racked up 100 million YouTube views, have the web’s most-streamed song, and have booked guest appearances on Ellen Degeneres and  the Today Show.  This video has even spawned this year's best group Halloween costume.

Now that we are all hooked on the absolute adorableness of the fox, we can definitely see the fox / woodland theme popping up in holiday cards, birthday parties, baby showers and even as nursery wall art.  We are at once surprised at just how much fox “stuff” is available and yet how hard it is to find products that work for party decor without having to DIY. Where the Wild Things Are – A Tribute to Maurice Sendak

Where the Wild Things Are: A Tribute to Maurice Sendak

Where the Wild Things Are – A Tribute to Maurice Sendak

(1928-2012)

“The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye and sailed back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day and into the night of his very own room where he found his supper waiting for him and it was still hot.”  Where the Wild Things Are

As many of you already know, we are huge fans of Maurice Sendak.  For more than forty years, the books Maurice Sendak has written and illustrated have nurtured children and adults alike and have challenged established ideas about what children's literature is and should be. The New York Times has recognized that Sendak's work “has brought a new dimension to the American children's book and has helped to change how people visualize childhood.” Parenting recently described Sendak as “indisputably, the most revolutionary force in children's books.”

To honor Mr. Sendak's memory we think the most appropriate tribute is making sure you have at least one Sendak book in your personal library.  Here are a few of our favorites!  Just scroll over the book cover for the title and click on the picture for a summary of each book.

2013 Caldecott, Newbery, and Printz Award Winning Books!

This year's recipients of the Caldecott Medal for Illustration, the Newbery Medal for Literature, and the Printz Award for Young Adult Literature are a diverse and worthy group ranging from a wry tale of a thieving fish to a touching story of friendship, hope and art, to an extraordinary book about the cruelties of man and nature, and the valiant, ongoing struggle for survival.

Having said that, we are withholding judgement as to whether any will make our own list of  Top 100 Children's Books – all still need to pass the test of timelessness.  No matter your age, the mere mention of  Where the Wild Things Are or Goodnight Moon is sure to make you smile!  The Giving Tree's message is eternal and Love You Forever – well, the title says it all!

What do you think?  Should these three books make the top 100 list?   Even if not, remember familiarity with children's literature makes for wonderful party conversations – knowledge is always the best way to party pretty!

by Ariel Diamond

I couldn't wait to spend the summer at home after my freshman year at Michigan State.  As much as I loved my first year of college, I looked forward to spending time with friends and loved ones.  Unfortunately between my summer school class schedule, course assignments, and juggling two jobs I had yet to spend the day with my favorite seven year old, my cousin Alyssa.

Alyssa and I love imaginary travel and have especially enjoyed children's books that take us to lands far, far away.  Over the years we probably have read Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are dozens of times.  We have joined both Babar and Curious George as they roam Africa and particularly enjoy Madeline's escapades in Paris.  When I read about Tea Collection's Around the World Activity Contest I had one of those “aha” moments.   Now that Alyssa has turned 7, I thought she could appreciate and begin to understand the cultures of the world through crafts.

I meticulously began to plan our special day together!  I would like nothing more than to win a $500 Tea Shopping Spree for Alyssa's back to school wardrobe!  Together we have already picked out some adorable pieces for Alyssa and even found a cute easy to wear, run-around dress for me!

All I needed to do was

  1. Take a photo of Alyssa completing a DIY activity based on one of Tea's Anniversary destinations (Brazil, Turkey, Japan, Korea, or West Africa).
  2. Add a photo caption describing the destination inspired craft
  3. Share our experience as part of Tea Collections Facebook entry page

Since PartyIdeaPros.com has been a huge supporter of Wrap2gether.org, a non-profit organization dedicated to global education and social justice, I had access to the most amazing art project ever.  Izzy had designed and fabricated original handmade African inspired dwenimmen jewelry to  foster cross-cultural relationships and benefit the Mancona International School in Odumase-Krobo, Ghana Eastern Region.   Lucky for me and for Alyssa, Izzy had enough supplies left over so we could actually complete an age appropriate project using hand made dwenimmen, a West African Adirinka symbol representing strength, humility, wisdom, and learning.

We decorated the leather with markers and puffy paint to give it that nice tribal feel. Once finished Alyssa couldn’t help but model and show off her new creation.
