Classic Mint Julep Recipe to Serve at Your Kentucky Derby Party

Compare Mint Julep recipes and consider tempting alternatives:

A few years back we turned on the Today Show to see the smiling face of Al Roker standing at Churchill Downs learning how to make a classic mint julep from Fred Noe, a seventh-generation distiller for Jim Beam. We think this might still be the best Mint Julep Recipe out there and we must admit, since then, we have spent many, many hours testing lots of other recipes. 🙂
.Here is the Mint Julep Recipe as seen on the Today Show:
- 1 part simple syrup
- 2 parts Bourbon
- Add crushed ice
- The most important part is the mint – first spank the mint and then add it to the mint julep cups
- Top your mint julep off with more crushed ice
- Enjoy!
- Hint (not on the video): An extra-nice touch is to trim straws so they just slightly stick out of the cup. Hence, when guests sip from the short straws, their noses will be close to the refreshing mint garnish.
Mint Julep Cups & Glasses
Once you have the recipe, the next question is where can you find a fabulous mint julep cup for your Day at the Races Kentucky Derby theme party?”
Our first stop is generally One Kings Lane because they often have a small but interesting selection of Mint Julep Cups on sale! Additionally you can find a nice selection of mint julep cups on Amazon (many available with free shipping if you are an Amazon Prime member). Prices there range from a mini beaded cup for as little as $8.95 to sterling silver cups for over $700 and lots of great cups priced below $30 each.
And we must fess up, this year we are planning to skip the classic look altogether. Instead we are going with the Kentucky Derby 143 Official 12oz. Mint Julep Glass. In addition to holding a heftier pour, this glass actually lists all the Kentucky Derby winners. And best of all, priced at just $5.99, we can send them home with our guests as a small party favor. And finally, you guessed it – we are planning to use the coordinating Kentucky Derby 143 Official party supplies!
